Many British holidaymakers are putting their lives at risk when driving abroad.

Recent research from Swiftcover found that 39 per cent of UK motorists will drive on the wrong side of the road at some point during their trip.

With around 4.4 million Brits taking to foreign roads over the summer, this means that some 1.7 million are potentially putting themselves in danger.

The research also indicated that UK drivers are twice as likely to collide with an oncoming vehicle while overseas, a situation that could easily leave them in hospital.

Swiftcover’s chief claims officer, Robin Reames, commented, “Lives are on the line because so many Brits are driving on the wrong side of the road when abroad.

“It’s such a fundamental element of driving on foreign roads but it only takes a split second to lose concentration before you find yourself head on with another vehicle.”

Putting a sticker on the steering wheel can act as useful a reminder to drive on the correct side of the road, Mr Reames also advised.
